Top 10 Finalists

Mellisa Hollingsworth

For all you thrill seekers out there, here is a woman who has one of the most exciting and dangerous jobs out there. Imagine flying down a giant icy track, head first at over 120 kilometers per hour! Seems nuts but it’s all in a days work for Mellisa Hollingsworth. For those of you wondering what exactly Mellisa does for a living, she is an Olympic Skeleton athlete. Mellisa’s sliding career started in 1995, when her cousin Ryan Davenport (Two Time World Cup Skeleton Champion) introduced her to the sport and she instantly fell in love with it.

Her first bit of success happened when she won a silver medal at the 2000 World Championships in Austria. Then a few years later in 2006, Mellisa won the Overall World Cup title, and slid to a historic bronze-medal finish in Torino at the Olympic Winter Games. She was the first Canadian to ever medal in the sport of skeleton at the Olympic level! With another World Cup title to her name in 2010, she was ready to show Canada that she could win gold at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver. Unfortunately, she made a costly error in the last turn of her race and ended up in 5th. And even though Mellisa was extremely disappointed with her finish she will be back in 2014 to bring home the gold!

Off the track Mellisa always finds time for humanitarian work. She recently spent some time in Africa with Right to Play to help create social change in areas affected by war, poverty and disease. To go along with this, Mellisa has a very colourful speaking career and loves to help young aspiring athletes reach their goals and dreams by sharing her experiences.

We think it’s absolutely amazing when athletes like Mellisa take time out of their busy schedules to help young kids reach their dreams. There is just no way to beat that kind of attitude!
